The Illegal by Lawrence Hill

(4/5) 400 pages

I really enjoyed this book. I first heard about it on Canada read on CBC radio and I wasn’t really interested in it. after reading the Book of Negros i felt that i should read more of Lawrence Hill. I found out that he wrote this book so I tried it out. This book was so well put together. The was story so vivid and active. It addresses so many social issues like racism, corruption, sexuality, sex workers and immigration. The book seems to be speaking to the whole world about different things like calling the USA out on immigration and racism, educating people on the fact that corruption can happen even in privileged countries. Overall I really enjoyed enjoyed this book and really recommend it to others.

UnderDogs by Markus Zusak

  (4/5) 512 pages

Just like the other book, I just read it because I’ve read other Markus Zusak books and I really enjoyed. The really cool thing about this book is that its three stories in one or three books in one. I’m still not 100% what was going on but that doesn’t really matter. The book really caught me by surprise because it felt to relate able. the main character had a life that I could almost relate to exactly. The that were faced weren’t something that I’ve ever had to face but the emotions behind the struggles really hit me. I gave this a 4/5 but i feel like its more of a 4.75 out of five because it really held me by my emotions through the whole book. I never really knew what I would be feeling next and even if it was the same emotion it would always still catch me by surprise. Again I would really recommend this book (these books?).

Seinlanguage by Jerry Seinfeld

♣  (3/5) 180 pages

This book was a really big eye opener for me. it showed me that some word can be funny on their own and others need some help to be funny. I love Jerry Seinfeld’s work; whether its his stand up or his show. This book however, made me see that his jokes aren’t really funny. Some were but most that were in the book weren’t. The book didn’t really feel like a joke book. I felt like I was just reading Jerry’s opinion on life. The book took away the things that made the jokes funny, at least for me. I didn’t hate the book in fact I found the book to be pretty insightful even though Jerry was making fun of society. The thing I enjoyed most about the book was the fact that it made me see comedy in a different light.

Reflection

I feel pretty good about this month. I finished three of the books on my reading list. I’m a little disappointed in myself for not reading any high level books. For the month of March, I would like to read the The Great Gatsby and Bridge of Clay.
